Actions You Can Take to Assist Arrested Students

1. Phone/Email the Commonwealth Attorney to Drop All Charges

James Hingeley – Albemarle County Commonwealth Attorney
Phone: 434-972-4072
Email: jhingeley@albemarle.org

Hello,

My name is __, and I am a [student/faculty member/staff member/alumni/parent/prospective student/community member] asking that you drop the charges against all arrested at the University of Virginia for demonstrating in solidarity with Palestine on May 4th, 2024. These protestors were ABIDING by UVA tent policy, which was nefariously changed without notice on the morning of May 4th. Deploying militarized troops on students, faculty, and community members protesting the ongoing genocide carried out by the Israeli occupation against Palestinians is shameful, and I urgently ask you to drop the charges against everyone arrested.

Thank you.

Hello,

My name is __, and I am a [student/faculty member/staff member/alumni/parent/prospective student/community member] asking that you do not enact disciplinary sanctions against students for demonstrating in solidarity with Palestine on May 4th, 2024. These protestors were ABIDING by UVA tent policy, which was nefariously changed without notice on the morning of May 4th. Deploying militarized troops on students, faculty, and community members protesting the ongoing genocide carried out by the Israeli occupation against Palestinians is shameful, and I I urgently ask you to halt any and all disciplinary proceedings against protestors.

Thank you.

4. Phone/Email to UVA Housing to Allow Arrested Students into Their Dorms

Gay Perez – Executive Director of Housing & Residence Life – (434) 243-3605 – bgd2j@virginia.edu

Hello my name is [your name] and I live in [on grounds housing area]. I am emailing to demand that you advocate for the return of my neighbors who were brutalized and arrested by the University Police Department for standing up against the ongoing genocide carried out by the Israeli occupation against Palestinians. They are effectively homeless at the moment and you have a duty to protect them. I will not accept that you cannot do anything as an answer because you at the very least need to advocate for students to administrators like Marsh Pattie and Donovan Golich who can do something about this matter.

5. Student Email to UVA Professors

Hello Professor [_____],

I am emailing today because I am heartbroken and terrified of the university’s administration. I had to watch my community get beat up, maced at close range, and dragged away like animals for protesting the ongoing genocide in Palestine. I had to watch cops prepare to brutalize my community with a smile on their faces. I could not count how many of my loved ones were injured. [Personalize this section please. Add if you had to support people through what happened, if you had chemical contaminants affect you, if you had mental health issues because of it]

I cannot go on with normal student life knowing this institution would rather support and rationalize more violence here and onto Palestinians abroad than disclose their investments and divest from genocide carried out by the Israeli occupation. I implore you to [grant me accommodations for the end of the semester/advocate for your students amongst your supervisors to let seized belongings taken by UPD and Facilities go to supportive faculty willing to distribute stolen items/organize your colleagues to advocate for students/push your supervisors to drop the charges against the arrestees] [Reiterate that none of this would have happened if the University simply disclosed their endowment investments and divested from genocidal institutions. PERSONALIZE!!!]

WXTJ Executive Board Statement on the Events of May 4, 2024

To the UVA Community,

Since its inception in 2013, WXTJ Radio has always stood for free artistic expression and the creation of community spaces. The UVA Liberation Encampment for Gaza was a place that embodied these ideals, a place of peace where community members gathered, sang, danced, created art, and stood in solidarity with the people of Palestine. We are appalled by the response from local and state police and our own university, as they destroyed this encampment, and maced, beat, and arrested members of our community who only stood for peace and freedom.

WXTJ is an organization made up of people from all walks of life. We are DJs, artists, and designers; we are musicians, writers, and punks who stand against war, genocide, and oppression. Most importantly, we are people who are not afraid to speak out when we see our community attacked and repressed. We reject the notion that organizations like ours should be silent about injustice. As a freeform radio station, one of our core values is supporting a platform for all voices to be heard. What the university did on May 4th was entirely antithetical to these views, and Executive Board of WXTJ Radio condemns the repression of free speech and assault of protestors by our own university. As a result, we are no longer affiliated with the upcoming Battle of the Bands event at Carr's Hill, as we cannot in good conscience endorse an event for an institution that instigates violence against its own students and continues to financially support institutions responsible for Palestinian genocide. We join other UVA student organizations in calling for the charges against students, faculty, and community organizers to be dropped as soon as possible.

Solidarity forever,
The 2023-2024 WXTJ Radio Executive Board
